Description
My Mom gave me some photos she took when she, my Dad, Aunt, and Uncle visited an old mill in Baltimore, Maryland. The mill was wonderful. It was just a tourist attraction, and no longer in use. One of the pictures had a dream-like quality to it. I imagined what it would be like to have been there. I thought it would be a great place to play as a child. Oh, what wonderful stories could be created. I wanted to do a painting that would speak to that. What a story needs is a hero to fight the monsters, so I gave my son, DJ, the weapon he needed, a light saber (we were all out of wooden swords) and took some reference pictures. We went to a local park with a lot of hills similar to the one in one of the pictures of the old mill landscape. I choose the grassy slope that would work best with the lighting and the angle and sent him up. Douglas, my husband, thought some opposition would add to the realism so he went up to spar with DJ. James my youngest did not want to miss all the fun so he went to join them. I got to take a lot of photos while laughing at their antics. I was able to work with these references to create the painting Bouts of Fantasy.

Terrific scene and one so many children - and adults who are attuned to them - can identify with. I love the soft look - works very well with the subject. My CAT in the MOUSE group for July 26.
